One-hit wonders don't come much cheaper than John Ashcroft, whose searing rendition of "Let The Eagle Soar" was—for a few weeks in 2002—as inescapable as Guantanamo Bay. But like Gerardo and Right Said Fred before him, Ashcroft was stricken by the sophomore slump. He soon receded from the pop charts entirely, falling back on his day job as attorney general. That in itself should be a lesson to budding American Idols everywhere: Always have an exit strategy. But since Ashcroft's political retirement in 2005, rumors have been flying high of Patriot Act, an introspective comeback album produced by Rick Rubin. Loaded with guest stars and stunt covers—including a ruminative duet with Dick Cheney on the Misfits anthem "Where Eagles Dare"—it proves America hasn't heard the last of its favorite statue-breast-hating Pentecostal. In the meantime, the faithful keep hope alive with reunited local band John Ashcroft Fan Club, appearing tonight at The Frequency's election-night extravaganza with Digibot and Swill!. Like many former Bush staffers, the Club promises "new" "songs" that denounce the administration's policies.
