MadCity Music Exchange releases its best-of-music list

Yet more record-store folk weigh in on 2008's tunes

Hot on the heels of B-Side's sprawling year-end music list, another stubborn independent record store, MadCity Music Exchange, named its favorites in a missive sent out Tuesday afternoon. This one's a bit smaller, but still all over the place, and doesn't bother with any rankings or vote tallies.

The Estranged, "No Love"

Dave Zero, who took ownership of the store a little over a year ago, picked such diverse releases as Australian garage-rockers Eddy Current Suppression Ring's Primary Colours, The Watson Twins' Fire Songs, She & Him's Volume One, Atmosphere's When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold, and Portland punks The Estranged's Static Thoughts. As on B-Side's list, Fleet Foxes, Alejandro Escovedo, and Drive-By Truckers all earn props.

Sir Victor Uwaifo, "Guitar Boy"

Zero, four employees, and a self-described "bearded regular shopper" also picked some outliers, from Nigerian musician Sir Victor Uwaifo's Guitar Boy Superstar 1970-1976 compilation to Hella drummer Zach Hill's Astrological Straits (a pretty insane venture, as anyone who saw Hill's set at the High Noon last month can attest).

The Midwest Beat, "Girl Gone West" (from a MadCity in-store)

On the local front, The Midwest Beat's vinyl reissue of its self-titled 2007 EP, Knuckel Drager's You Do Better!, and Jentri Colello's Bird Of Prey EP get a shout. The store says it'll have print copies of its list by the end of the week, and it's already up on MadCity's MySpace blog.
