Bored of aimless browsing at Madison’s popular farmers markets? In Stand By Your Stand, Decider heads out to find their best and strangest offerings, and tips on how to use them.
The source: Tigerton, Wis.
Wares: Containers of pure Grade A and Grade B maple syrup, ranging in size from a few ounces to a one-gallon jug; maple butter; and maple candy fashioned into suckers and nuggets shaped like maple leaves.
Best deal: Translucent golden maple suckers for 50 cents.
Weirdest item: Thick, waxy maple butter that’s colored and textured. Fortunately, it tastes a lot better than it looks.
Serving suggestion: Last winter’s record snowfall made for a great sap run, says owner Rosanne Marquardt. She recommends baking the syrup on squash, glazing a ham with it, or drizzling it over fruit. It also makes a great substitute for sugar.
Find it at: Dane County Winter Farmers' Market, Saturdays, 7:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Monona Terrace through Dec. 20, and at the Madison Senior Center, Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., beginning Jan. 3.
