There are still three weeks before anyone has to think about groaning their way through a Thanksgiving meal, and even longer before the feedbag frenzy that takes place every December. But that doesn’t mean it’s not a great time to get a head-start packing on some guilt-free, pre-resolution poundage. Saturday’s Polish Christmas Bazaar at the West Side Club is a great place to begin the yuletide shopping, general merriment, and eating—lots and lots of eating. Pick out a few stocking stuffers from the reams of traditional Polish jewelry and pottery, then grab a sausage topped with sauerkraut and get down to business. In addition to the most familiar Polish foods, there’ll also be authentic items never to be found at a baseball game: braided hallah bread, kolaches (filled pastries), tortes, chocolate bars, poppy seed rolls, and pickled veggies. If that all sounds too heavy, banjoist Tom Wosikowski will be on hand to lighten the mood with some post-meal pickin’.

Fatsometer: 7. The healthiest thing on the menu is bread. Even in a post-Atkins reality, a “giant loaf of carbs” rarely tops anyone’s list of weight-loss foodstuffs.
