Reminder: The Devil And Daniel Johnston to screen at High Noon Saloon Wednesday night

Two weeks before Daniel Johnston's Aug. 12 show at the Barrymore Theatre, fans can get a more intense taste of the singer-songwriter's famously wacky inner life and very traumatic real life with a July 29 screening at the High Noon Saloon of Jeff Feuerzeig's documentary The Devil And Daniel Johnston. The film traces Johnston’s rise to underground stardom as well as his battles with mental illness, seeking to paint a full portrait of the artist through his cartoonish drawings, distinctive voice, bipolar disorder, esoteric lyrics, and unsettling fascinations with Satan and death. (The Butthole Surfers, who play the Barrymore on Oct. 6, also factor into Johnston's strange journey.) Johnston's many eccentricities not only led to some well-loved folk songs, but also caused Johnston to be the highly regarded and often misunderstood figure he is today. The happy-hour screening is free, and includes a chance to win tickets to the actual concert.
