An officemate of ours returned from a lunch run with some sad news today: Myles Teddywedgers Cornish Pasty shop (101 State St.), at the corner of State Street and Capitol Square, is closed for the time being, with a note on the door announcing the death of founder Miles Allen. The Wisconsin State Journal reported Saturday that Allen died Friday of cancer at age 64. His funeral was held this morning. Teddywedgers, established in 1976, is a local comfort-food institution, and its meat-and-potato and pizza pasties—basically enormous hand-pies with excellent crusts—have brought plenty of hearty warmth to freezing workdays here at The Onion's local office. The food and modest-yet-eccentric presence are reminders of what State Street should be, and usually it was Allen himself behind the counter serving and cooking. The note on the door does not specify when or if the shop will re-open, but we certainly hope Teddywedgers sticks it out. We offer our thanks to Mr. Allen and our condolences to his family.
