Bored of aimless browsing at Madison's popular farmers' markets? In Stand By Your Stand, Decider heads out to find their best and strangest offerings and tips on how to use them.
The source: Boscobel, Wis.
Wares: Herbal teas made from wild and organically grown herbs mixed according to astrological signs; sorghum, honey, and maple syrup; ginseng; bee pollen, pure wax candles, and propolis; and seasonal products including watercress, catnip, kale, parsley, and peppers.
Best deal: Un-cracked hickory nuts for $4 a pound. Cracked nuts can go for a steep $20 a pound, but once you start trying to crack them, you may be willing to pay someone else for the trouble.
Weirdest item: Smudge sticks—bundles of herbs burned for use in blessings and spiritual purification.
Serving suggestion: Owner Francisco Dremsa says his raw propolis, a resinous mixture collected by bees, is good for the gums and is sometimes added to toothpaste. Dresma prefers to take his in a tincture, a medicinal, part-alcohol mixture.
Find it at: Dane County Farmers' Market, Saturdays, 6am-2pm, Capitol Square, through Nov. 8.
