Screamin' Cyn Cyn And The Pons set the table for one last Local Band Wednesday

screamin' cyn cyn and the pons Chad Ovshak Don't leave these people hanging, for your sake as much as theirs.

We've all been jilted at the fun-time altar before, and chances are it wasn't pretty. Though we know that Screamin' Cyn Cyn And The Pons is one of those local bands that can actually count on drawing a crowd up to the stage, we can't help but wonder how hard they'd lose their shit if no one showed up. Oh, wait, they illustrate this for us very vividly at pretty much every show, via their song "Set The Table." The Pons' sense of punk-rock tragicomedy has never been sharper: Guitarist Cynthia Burnson invites us to her dinner party, but as she shrieks herself into a frenzy, we realize it was all an off-the-meds dream, the elaborate fantasy of a lonesome psychopath. We realize she might not be the most stable hostess out there, but damned if she and her OCD didn't try to set us up for a nice time—"upon your arrival, be sure to throw your keys in the fishbowl. Then you will be seated around a vast mahogany table. See the cornucopia? See the napkin rings? It's all for you, my very special guests." And this is how she gets when she has an audience. So we're crossing our fingers that some folks show up to watch the Pons close out this summer's Local Band Wednesdays series on the Terrace tonight with The Takebacks (another Madison act we like a lot). Otherwise, Cyn Cyn might think of some less-than-ladylike uses for her knife, fork, and spoon.
