For most, Opening Day means freshly oiled mitts and Miller Lite. For others, “opening day” conjures visions of fresh, squeaky cheese curds, the kind found at Madison’s most-anticipated and famous food tradition: the outdoor Dane County Farmers’ Market, which kicks off on Saturday, April 18 at 6 a.m. Wrapped around the Capitol Square, this weekly carnival of homegrown food and goods reliably stays abuzz with West Siders, East Siders, suburbanites, out-of-towners, and students. While the first few markets don’t have the bounty you’ll find come June, it’s worth your while to roll out of bed early for hot, spicy cheese bread, bison jerky, maple syrup, just-picked spring spinach, and every type of pastry your sweet tooth could crave.
Fatsometer: 10. Get your game face on for an early rise—rain or shine, the farmers will be out on the Square, and the sooner you’re there the better selection you’ll have.
