When buckshot enthusiasts get together to compare gauges, debate the merits of lead shot vs. steel shot, and trade terrorist hunting licenses for back issues of Field & Stream, does the air grow tense with the threat of violence? Or does it mellow out into a neighborly exchange, with folks cleaning each other's barrels while muttering sleepy platitudes about the 2nd Amendment? Judging by the stripped-down Austin trio Shotgun Party, such gatherings are rowdy in spirit, but the only things ricocheting around are the pleasantly rustic fiddle and walking bass of Western-swing tunes. If singer-guitarist Jenny Parrott is an arms-bearing frontierswoman, she sounds sweet and bashful in the role, even on up-tempo numbers like "Yell Out The Chords." Word is, the band plans to get a little rowdier at this Saturday's basement show at Kiki's House Of Righteous Music, but it'll at least be friendlier than your average militia meeting.
