In commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the onset of the American Civil War—an event bloody enough to be an odd subject for celebration, but let’s go with it—the Civil War re-enactment event Rally ’Round The Flag will invade Lake Leota Park in Evansville this weekend, May 20-22. Uniformed history buffs; arcane weapons enthusiasts; soldiers; officers; the personae of Pres. Abraham Lincoln and first lady Mary Todd Lincoln; itinerant musicians; and Southern belles will all break bread in a time-warped camp with tents, lectures, a farmer’s market, parades, and fireworks. Most events are free, but “Supper With The Troops” is $10 for adults or $5 for kids. The menu is a hearty affair of shredded beef, baked beans, grilled pork tenderloin, cornbread, and plenty of coffee. No doubt there will be some unofficial Kentucky whiskey shared in honor of Ulysses S. Grant, though it must be furtively passed in flasks of silver.
FATSOMETER: 8. Although this event is more about history than fake blood, your diet could end up being a casualty.
