Stand By Your Stand: Snug Haven Farm

This week's featured farmers'-market stall

BlueHavenFarm Erika Janik

Bored of aimless browsing at Madison's popular farmers markets? In Stand By Your Stand, Decider heads out to find their best and strangest offerings, and tips on how to use them.

The source: Belleville, Wisconsin.

Wares: Famous for its winter spinach, Snug Haven Farm also grows a variety of lettuces, arugula, tomatoes, and huge bouquets of flowers.

Best deal: Four heads of lettuce for $5. Choose from seven different varieties.

Weirdest item: There's nothing terribly strange about lettuce, though Snug Haven Farm is currently selling what it jokingly refers to as "teenage" lettuce. It’s not quite the prized baby lettuce, nor is it the bland senior-citizen varieties found in your local grocery store.

Serving suggestion: Forget seven-layer salads. Impress your friends with a seven-lettuce salad instead, and throw in some arugula for an added peppery bite.

Find it at: Dane County Farmers' Market, Saturdays, 6 a.m.-2 p.m., Capitol Square, through Nov. 7.
