Sunday night: Revolving Doors at The Frequency

Local instrumental trio Revolving Doors wrote its first batch of songs thinking it’d eventually have a singer. Even so, its first, self-titled album summoned up plenty of thoughtful mood and texture from the band’s weave of keys, samples, guitar, and drums. They started recording the follow-up album last summer, and drummer Brad Hawes says the band has nearly finished tracking and might put out the new disc in April. During tonight's set supporting The New Monarchs and GlassGhosts at The Frequency, the band is planning to play mostly new material, along with a couple of songs from the first disc. "We've gotten better at making our band work, so to speak," Hawes tells Decider, noting that the new songs are a lot more keyboard-driven than the older ones are. In addition to writing songs better suited to their vocal-less lineup, Hawes says, the band's had a lot more time to record this time around: "We tracked the last record in four days, and this time around we've spent at least three or four days just on drums, let alone everything else." Fair enough, but the first album had some highlights that didn't sound too rushed, including "My New Favorite Abacus," which you can stream below:
