Most people aren’t entirely sure of the differences between bourbon and scotch. But those who can identify the type of rye used in whiskey will feel perspicacious on the floor of Madison Malt Society’s Distill America: A Celebration Of American Distilling, being held on Feb. 17, from 7 to 10 p.m. at The Edgewater Hotel (666 Wisconsin Ave., 608-256-9071). A series of pre-parties will function as meet and greets for those in the business. Giants like Wild Turkey will swoop in to flaunt their distribution footprints, but the majority of the distilleries on the bill are smaller and easily approachable. Yahara Bay and Old Sugar Distillery are in Madison, so they don’t have far to go. AEppelTreow Winery (makers of artisan hard cider), Great Lakes Distillery, and 45th Parallel will represent greater Wisconsin. It’s a solidly local affair despite the visitors from afar: The event benefits WORT community radio and the Isthmus, Star Liquor, and Union Cab (providing discounted cab rides that night) are sponsoring the event. General admission tickets are $55 (or pay $65 for VIP entrance and get in 45 minutes early) and available online or at locations of Star Liquor, Barriques, The Malt House, and Merchant.
FATSOMETER: 6. A spread of appetizers for noshing on will be available at the event. However, “Patrons are advised that coming on a full stomach is a good idea.”
