Bored of aimless browsing at Madison's popular farmers markets? In Stand By Your Stand, Decider heads out to find their best and strangest offerings, and tips on how to use them.
The source: Fennimore, Wis.
Wares: Emu meat in various forms: jerky, steaks, sticks, burgers, brats (in regular, cranberry, and pineapple-flecked Hawaiian flavors), and sausages; large, dark teal-colored emu eggs; emu hides and wrist bands; fresh herbs; and emu feathers.
Best deal: Double-shafted emu feathers in natural, yellow, and green, two for $.25.
Weirdest item: Um… emu products.
Serving suggestion: Owner Betty Lou Cauffman says emus are the closest living relative to the Tyrannosaurus Rex. She likes her dino remnants best in a marinated and grilled steak and points out that emu is a lean, healthy red meat.
Find it at: Dane County Farmers' Market, Saturdays, 6 a.m.-2 p.m., Capitol Square, through Nov. 8; and at the Dane County Winter Farmers' Market, Saturdays, 7:30 a.m.-noon, Monona Terrace, through Dec. 20.
