Weekend Agenda: Aug. 14-16

The best of this weekend:

FRIDAY
With Strollers Theatre kicking off its production of David Mamet's Romance at the Bartell Theatre, we're expecting lots of finely honed barbs to fly through the air and at least cancel out the icky effects of Metro Station's show at the Majestic. Headlights, meanwhile, are plenty huggable, but their free show at the Terrace will exemplify the more grown-up side of pop songwriting. The ladies of Madison's The Type have a tendency to celebrate certain other ladies of rock, and will headline a benefit for the Rape Crisis Center at the High Noon Saloon. The weekend's not too heavy on cool cinema events, but Mickey's evening of surreal silent films should make up for that.

SATURDAY
It falls almost entirely to Wisconsin-linked musicians to keep Saturday night lively, from the melodic death metal of Appleton band Onus at The Frequency to formerly local hip-hop act Bi-Polar Bear at the Alchemy, The jazz-pop duo Joy And The Boy celebrates a new CD at the High Noon, while Madison singer-songwriter Tom Hanson offers a sit-down evening of hushed folk tunes at Mother Fool's and Grupo Candela plays a get-up-and-dance set of Latin music at the Terrace.

SUNDAY
It's time for Madison's loyal crowd of bluegrass lovers to meet some fancy Swiss folks, the Kruger Brothers, at the High Noon.
