The best of this weekend:
FRIDAY
If you want to get through this night, it's best to get eclectic. As in driving out to a barn to check out the Midwest Gypsy Swing Festival, or heading to the High Noon for a night of electronica and house DJs. Then again, you can also scratch a hole in your head wondering how bands like Tantric (playing The Annex) keep going, or what exactly Needtobreathe (playing the Majesitc Theatre) is going for with its harmless muddle of a sound.
SATURDAY
This year's Madison Roots Festival at Capital Brewery features soul veteran Bettye LaVette, which means it's a lot more exciting than it's been in previous years. The drinking also gets started early over at the High Noon, where "insurgent country" label Bloodshot Records holds a free Beer-B-Que featuring artists like Justin Townes Earle, Ha Ha Tonka, Bobby Bare Jr., The Bottle Rockets, and more. The night just keeps getting more fun and busy as it wears on, thanks to Chicago rappers Cool Kids at the Majestic Theatre (the show was moved from the Orpheum Stage Door), local metal band Lords Of Discipline celebrating a new CD at The Frequency, and the ramshackle pop of The Roadside Graves on the Terrace.
SUNDAY
It's a pretty restful Sunday, but Four Seasons Theatre's run of Evita at the Union Theater concludes with a matinée performance.
