Weekend Agenda: Aug. 28-30
Locos Por Juana help get the weekend off to a festive start.
The best of this weekend:
FRIDAY
Orton Park Festival will be open for all your hanging and milling-about needs throughout the weekend, and kicks off Friday night with such danceable offerings as Miami outfit Locos Por Juana. But of course there's always indie rock in a black box, as Throw Me The Statue and The Brunettes share a bill at The Annex with some friendly pop sounds that have been growing on us lately. The non-wallflower crowd might be more inclined to check out the eclectic house-music mixes of London's DJ Demi at the Majestic Theatre.
SATURDAY
The hanging and milling-about extends downtown with the King Street Block Party, though in music terms we're still tempted by Saturday's Orton Park lineup, which spans from Lucas Cates to Robbie Fulks. (Fulks also joins fellow Orton act Pistolera for a special Orton After Dark show at the High Noon Saloon.) The night that would've been Michael Jackson's 51st birthday has some increasingly dark shit hanging over it, but the Majestic's Jackson-themed dance party should help matters a bit. But if you're truly desperate for cheer, join Jimmy Buffet at Alpine Valley.
SUNDAY
The final day of Orton Park Fest starts up early and closes out with a set from New Orleans' Trombone Shorty, and after that, The Coal Men bring some solid roots-rock to the High Noon.
