Weekend Agenda Weekend hunting preparations

The opening of Wisconsin's deer-hunting season on Saturday morning means little to those of us who don't own guns, yet we'd all do well to review some safety pointers as this pre-Thanksgiving weekend begins. If you must point your music directly at living things, just make sure it's loaded with non-lethal, and preferably locally sourced, ammunition like the widely scattering shot of Cougar, bringing its powerful instrumental rock back to town with a Friday show at the Madison Museum Of Contemporary Art. If you've got more of a cocky, crossbow-wielding vibe, burn it off Saturday, when local post-hardcore blisterizers The United Sons Of Toil play a free show at the Rathskeller. They say the peace of nature by itself can make a long day of deer-slaughter enjoyable, and there's plenty of comforting scenery hidden in A Sunny Day In Glasgow's experimental pop (playing Friday at the Rathskeller), or Haley Bonar's more down-to-earth, equally tasteful tunes (playing Friday at the High Noon).

Venison enthusiasts aren't the only ones out for game and glory this weekend. The filmmakers of Wis-Kino's Fall Kabaret will have 48 hours to turn around short video works, screening the killings Sunday night at Sundance Cinemas. And hey, should you wish to support life to compensate for all the hooved little motherfuckers goin' down this weekend, there's some very worthwhile benefit action: the Majestic's Funk Out Cancer benefit on Friday, and the TV-star cover act Band From TV, raising funds for an epilepsy foundation Saturday at the Alliant Energy Center. Will the holier-than-thou musical duo of God's Pottery have anything to say about this assault on God's creatures during Saturday's two sets at the Project Lodge? Probably not, as long as all you blaze-orange warriors out there are straight and keep the Kingdom in your sights. Finally, the Polish Film Festival (running Friday through Sunday at Vilas Hall) might not be quite as disorienting as stepping into the woods for the first time, but seeing your first magical-realist penis shot (in Snow White And The Russian Red, screening Friday night during the fest) may be an even greater prize than mounted antlers.
