HOLIDAY SALE AT THE ONION STORE

Weekend Agenda Weekend shovelin' buddies

flecktones Béla Fleck And The Flecktones

If this weekend were an arty short film, it would begin with powder from a snow-blower arcing up furiously against a grey sky. Then the shot would dissolve smoothly to Taylor Hicks' salt-and-pepper hair, for though he is an Americal Idol-made star, his Friday show at the High Noon Saloon promises some of the placid charm of an overcast snow day. Then perhaps a pair of rusty old metal shovels scraping against the driveway, in sync with the gargling dance-y post-punk fury of Madison band Dick The Bruiser's Friday show at Mickey's. If you're more the kind to just dump some salt on the ground and wait a while, enjoy the patient literary stylings that Dean Bakopoulos and Ben Percy will share Friday at an Overture Center reading.

Besides, there has to be some way that science could harness the body heat that will surely result when Mama Digdown's Brass Band crowds into the Corral Room Saturday for a CD-release show. Madison singer-songwriter Icarus Himself's early Saturday-evening show at The Frequency might better suit those who just trudge through the slushy wastes with a wry, fatalistic smirk, but if anyone's an expert on snowbound boredom, it'd have to be the two Wisconsin natives behind the Found Footage Festival, returning Saturday to the Orpheum. And hey, Encore Studio's production of Tidings From The Seasonally Affected could not have chosen a better Friday to open up at the Bartell. If you insist on salvaging your cheer, then you'll find excellent companionship in Béla Fleck's holiday concert at the Orpheum Sunday. Also that night, Blueheels' show with a bunch of other local talent at the High Noon is sure to descend into jolly alcoholic rowdiness.
