Alejandro Escovedo has reached the age where people might expect a songwriter to either ruminate heavily on the past or try to rock out like his younger self. He's chosen both, and avoided the pitfalls of both. He came close to dying (during a battle with hepatitis C), but returned with 2006's lavishly dark The Boxing Mirror, then fired up the guitars for 2008's joyous Real Animal. While Animal's lyrics look back on his punk-rock days, its up-tempo energy seems like something innate that's grown with the man. That's even clearer when Escovedo and band play live, and here they'll likely include some songs from a recently recorded new album due out in the summer.
