And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, The Secret Machines, and Invade Rome at Majestic Theatre

After a tepid reception for 2005’s Worlds Apart and 2006’s So Divided, ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead’s The Century Of Self, its self-released sixth studio album and first since parting ways with Interscope, all but jettisons the pop dilettantism of those major-label bids for rock stardom. Yet even though its newest no longer bulges against the barriers of heightened expectation, it still sounds barely contained: a wild assemblage of lurching rhythms and cacophonous riffs—plus a choir or two—that’s characteristic of the band’s merger of the feral and grandiose. New York space-rockers The Secret Machines appear behind their third album, a self-titled one from last year, which revisits much of the same glammy, psychedelic corners of albums past; but it also shows a group more and more invested in what it’s going for.
