Anthony Jeselnik and Lauren Bishop at Comedy Club on State

Anthony Jeselnik’s 2010 album, Shakespeare, paints the stand-up as a horrible human being: He cracks wise about sexually harassing his coworkers, pauses to congratulate himself on the album’s progress, and tells a story about running a smear campaign against a wheelchair-bound opponent for high school class president. (One slogan was, “Vote for Anthony: His ideas have legs.”) But the jokes are so polished, his delivery so confident, and the routines so patently absurd that it’s difficult to actually despise Jeselnik’s despicable comedic persona. Even Charlie Sheen didn’t harbor any ill will toward the comic after he cracked drug jokes and threw out low blows at the Comedy Central roast of the storied “winner.”
