The Antiprism and Black Goat at The Frequency

The four members of The Antiprism wear black hooded capes and mirrored aviator sunglasses onstage, which is an appropriate fit for the Madison band's constellations of old-school metal, but also a bit misleading. Iron Maiden and black-metal melodies (sometimes played at Black Sabbath tempos) combine with the dual vocal attack of guitarist Alex Drake's slaughter-portending growl and drummer Kristine Drake's hissing screech on the band's recent self-titled album, but it rarely feels cheesy or too self-serious. From the spacey dirge "Moonlight Overdrive" to the galloping, thrashing menace of "Ice Song" and "Exorcist," the be-cloaked ones play it equal parts warlock and punk rock, balancing the drama with bare-bones ampage.
