The Antiprism and Black Goat at High Noon Saloon
Weedeater’s specialty is heavy sludgecore with a Southern slant, and whether serving doses of raw power or long swamp-blues jams, the North Carolina trio maintains a hypnotizing sense of doom and dread. Dirty low-end distortion hits in slow waves, drowning out “Dixie” Dave Collins’ mouth-breathing vocals. The band’s third full-length (its first for stoner-rock tastemaker Southern Lord), God Luck And Good Speed, has an extra hit of corrosion thanks to producer Steve Albini, who makes the band’s hacking, resin-coated cough sound like it’s dredging up a century’s worth of rebel spirit bubbling below the Mason-Dixon. During a recent break in performing, Collins managed to blast off one of his toes in a shotgun-cleaning accident—inspiring its current "Nine Toe Tour"—which, for the price of a digit, gave Weedeater even more bubba-badass cred.
