Asumaya and Julian Lynch at Project Lodge

While it's easy to slap a million cheap buzzwords—like “no-fi” or “psychedelic”—on Julian Lynch's latest release, Orange You Glad (oof), the New Jersey-to-Madison transplant explores a warmer and more inviting sound than those labels allow for. Orange You Glad drags listeners below the floorboards with watery guitars that pulsate under droning keys, distant vocals, meandering basslines, and crawling drums. Additionally, Lynch's taste for using random objects to evoke alien-sounding chirps, hisses, and sonic twitches really colors in the record. While it's difficult to tell how Lynch's soothing sonic wall will build in a live setting, it certainly has the potential to thrive beyond the warm confines of his recorded work.
