Atmosphere, Blueprint, Grieves, Budo, and DJ Rare Groove at Orpheum Theatre
Atmosphere may be a hip-hop group, but its DIY style encompasses endless touring in a van, self-releasing (and self-marketing) records like its recent, free Leak At Will EP, playing in grimy clubs, etc. The duo’s dynamic sound reflects this, forsaking Casiotone beats and cartoonish gangsta themes for samples that evoke vintage soul and lyrics that hew closer to a Jim Carroll short story. As a follow-up to 2008's lush, well-received When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold, Rhymesayers reissued Atmosphere's out-of-print second album, God Loves Ugly, last year. To commemorate its current “All My Friends Tour” with fellow Rhymesayers artists Blueprint, Grieves, and Budo, Atmosphere recently released an easygoing single of the same name.
