The August Teens at High Noon Saloon
It's easy to overlook local bands that don't play many shows and take forever to finish records, but Madison's The August Teens make a strong case for themselves on A Kiss In Wisconsin, an album they've chipped away at for several years and finally release at this show. The Teens lean toward the proudly wussy end of the power-pop spectrum, writing lyrics peppered with girls' names and melodies that would go just as well with a dapper vocal group. Even on the more rocking tunes, they've got a way of keeping it catchy, but not shoving it down anyone's throat. And even on the lovely, aching title track, they balance earnest affection with just the right amount of homegrown corniness.
