Ava Luna, Laura Gibson, and Anna Vogelzang at The Frequency
Laura Gibson’s voice and sparingly plucked guitar create a sound with both a pretty, distant side and an earthy undertow. In fact it’s her vocals, wavering and creaking but also carrying plenty of graceful melodies, that led the songs on 2009’s Beasts Of Seasons. Now, after more than 200 performances worldwide since that record, Gibson’s latest effort, La Grande, has been released. Inspired by her time spent in the town of the same name in Oregon, La Grande is set to expand upon her subtle, haunting sound, while maintaining all of the earnestness and songwriting prowess she has continually displayed. Here as well is Ava Luna, with a band name that almost suggests radio metal, but has a sound that Chris Weingarten accurately described as “Stax-meets-Kraftwerk,” particularly on the new single “Wrenning Day.”
