Balaclavas, Apache Dropout, and Population at Memorial Union Rathskeller
A too-quick misread of this Houston band’s name might conjure images of delicious flaky pastries. But look closer, because Balaclavas is actually another word for ski masks, the kind people wear while committing real-ass crimes, and it’s a fitting descriptor for the band. The three-piece conspires to put down dirty, incessant grooves; howling-in-the-distance vocals; and cluttered noise, all of which serve the dark purpose its music seems to promote. On 2011’s Snake People, horror-house synths and stinging guitar lines establish the atmosphere of danger on “Legs Control” and “Down And Loose.” That feeling is carried over well to the group’s 2012 EP, Second Sight. It’s music to fuck shit up to.
