The Beat Chefs at Alchemy
Madison funk-rock party outfit The Bombshelters sends drunken college-town crowds into raucous fits of delight with its organic hip-hop covers like "Nuthin' But A 'G' Thang," so it makes sense that singer/guitarist Brandon Beebe and percussionist Rob Garza would start seeking that kind of approval more often. The duo's side project, The Beat Chefs, mixes hip-hop, R&B, soul, and reggae covers, all recreated with beatbox, keyboards, guitars, and various percussion (to extremely mixed results). Despite the novelty of rock dudes doing hip-hop being completely drained long ago, The Beat Chefs still have some fun with it—especially when playing the "tiger style" breakdown on "Wu-Tang Clan Ain't Nuthing To F' Wit" or slowly building the verses of Warren G and Nate Dogg's "Regulate."
