Bell X1 and Wild Light at High Noon Saloon
While there may be a lot of British groups loftily bloviating along in the wake of Coldplay's success, Irish band Bell X1's spacey, melancholy pop songs make room for some intimately eccentric songwriting alongside the shimmery guitar and synth hooks. Frontman Paul Noonan actually goes rather easy on the yearning Chris Martin-style falsettos and takes his time exploring odd subjects and notions in his lyrics, lending plenty of curiosity and a sense of humor to albums like 2006's Flock. That holds true even as the band works some more glossy electronic tweaks into its sound: Its new album, Blue Lights On The Runway, opens with a song entitled "The Ribs Of A Broken Umbrella."
