Ben Folds at Overture Center for the Arts - Overture Hall
It's pretty apt that keyboard-banging power-popper Ben Folds is playing Madison on Halloween weekend: For his latest release, Folds basically merged himself with another eccentric feature of college life, the a cappella group. Yep, University A Cappella! features several of those groups performing such Folds standards as "Brick" and "Army" in dense vocal arrangements, as if the originals weren't already saturated with melody and grinning cleverness. This is the guy who produced William Shatner's 2004 talk-sing comeback masterpiece, Has Been, so such wacky moves are to be expected. But the tunes are still more charming from Folds himself. Last year’s Way To Normal (his most recent proper solo album) marked a return to Folds’ playful wit and upbeat songwriting.
