Ben Sollee And Daniel Martin Moore at Majestic Theatre
The younger generation of bands picking up on the pretty harmonies and lulling acoustic guitars of folk music sometimes only vindicates the aging hippies who insist contemporary music lacks a political spine. Kentuckians Daniel Martin Moore and Ben Sollee balance a little protest with Appalachian retreat on the new collaborative album Dear Companion, built around Moore's acoustic guitar, Sollee's cello, and, in part, their objections to coal-mining companies that blow up mountains in their home region. "I wouldn't make a sound if I wasn't so angry," begins "Only A Song," which deliberately pairs the lyrics with almost-serene, swaying melody. There's not a rant to be heard here, just songs that let the personal mingle with the conflict and optimism of the writers' surroundings.
