The Bitter Tears, Butte, and Mike Behrends at Inferno

Chicago's The Bitter Tears seek out the fault lines in humanity's soul and build teetering vaudevillian playhouses across them. Live, the band often dresses and acts like a gang of surrealist train-hoppers, blurring cracked, cryptic humor into the abyss-gazing lyrics and half-off-the-rails twang of the songs on this year's Jam Tarts In The Jakehouse. At a certain point, The Bitter Tears almost defy a crowd to discern what's funny and what's just plain dark. For two dudes banging out short songs, Madison duo Butte makes this year's I Don't Want To Complain To You sound rather big and fleshed out, hitting a nice balance of sparkle and snot on tunes like "Turn The Night Down" and "The Takeoff (Not The Landing)."
