The Books and Baby Dee at Majestic Theatre
The Books warmed lots of ears with 2003's The Lemon Of Pink, an evocative collage of electronics, hissy clicks, banjos, snippets of voice, and a bevy of other sounds. On 2005's Lost And Safe, the group's working method still wasn't entirely clear, but the addition of consistent vocals at least made it seem like there was intended meaning in the subtly jarring musical hodgepodge. It all measured in as something of a whispered classic, though The Books' live show—big on process but not to the point of distraction—has become even more storied. Still, they'll be hard-pressed to upstage opener Baby Dee: The transgender singer, songwriter, pianist, and harp player sprawls across classical, cabaret, medieval folk and choral music, and other oblique influences. Dee's voice squeezes every last concentrated drop of drama from the resulting songs, but in a way that's too visceral and captivating to fall prey to cheap shtick.
