Busdriver and Star Persons at Memorial Union Terrace
Underground rapper Busdriver has never quite fit in, which is one of his greatest strengths—his cerebral, acrobatic lyricism always challenges hip-hop convention, even when he panders to audiences with appeals for crossover success. Having scored notoriety only among the indie-hip-hop intelligentsia, however, Busdriver seemed to be picking a fight with his difficult 2007 album RoadKillOvercoat (released by the punk label Epitaph), on which he lashes out against “art-school kids” and “yuppie scum.” He plays here in support of a new release called Jhelli Beam, marked once again by a fascinating panoply of styles that sounds like nothing else out there.
