Chairlift, The Soft Pack, and Micachu And The Shapes at Memorial Union Terrace
Though most recognized for the addictively sweet and upbeat song “Bruises,” which was featured in an iPod Nano commercial, Brooklyn band Chairlift often uses its skill with synthesizer, bass, and keyboard to concoct a far darker, moodier sound. The group’s 2008 album, Does You Inspire You, unwinds behind singer Caroline Polachek’s sultry voice, her crisp alto adding an edge to its fragility that makes Chairlift both heartbreaking and haunting. UK band Micachu And The Shapes' recent debut, Jewellery, doesn't blend genres so much as smash them together and glue the bits back any which way. Grime, folk, synth-pop, and glitchy electronica are all in the mix, and though leader Mica Levi never lets you know where she's heading from one moment to the next, it all somehow, unexpectedly and charmingly, works.
