Charlemagne, The Hemlines, and Vid Libert at The Frequency

Carl Johns' time in Madison music included the founding of two well-liked ventures into pleasantly odd pop, NoahJohn and Charlemagne. He's since moved on to the East Coast and his current home of Berlin, and last played here in 2007 behind the Charlemagne album We Can Build An Island. Some of the demos he's put online recently offer a noisier version of Charlemagne, with lots of fuzzed-out but friendly guitars skating over the comfort-pop melodies. Opening up are some local standbys who haven't left just yet: The Hemlines is a newer band that features endearing power-pop singer-songwriter Erika Zar (of The Runners-Up, The Grizzlies, and more), and Vid Libert uses this show to release Half Gone, a country take on his earnest and usually more understated mix of folk songwriting and reverb-washed arrangements.
