Cinematheque: Always—Sunset On Third Street at Vilas Hall

Anyone seeking a dramatic crash-course in how Japan transitioned from a post-war crater to a technological behemoth may as well start with Takashi Yamazaki's 2005 drama Always—Sunset On Third Street, whose portrayal of working-class life in Tokyo circa 1958 swept Japan's Academy Awards in 2006. As the city starts to show its promise in the form of the new Tokyo Tower, a family-run auto shop and its employees struggle to get a foothold in the modern world, as do a whole ensemble of young Japanese folk, including a man who runs a candy store across the street. Still, just like American films and TV shows about the '50s, Always is sensitive to the little everyday wonders of the age, from the Tower itself to the neighborhood's first black-and-white TV.
