Cinematheque: Disko Ja Tuumasõda (Disco & Atomic War) at Vilas Hall
Jaak Kilmi's loose documentary Disco And Atomic War spins a Cold War-era narrative about the effects of Western culture on communist youth through reenactments and archival footage. Centered on a small town in Estonia that's able to receive Finnish broadcasts of American TV, the film centers on laughably baffled government officials who fear the introduction of capitalism through commercials, as well as the delighted populace who can't wait to share Dallas' plot twists with their distant relatives elsewhere in the country. Whether or not the film's central premise—that pop culture had a significant role in undermining communism—holds much water, it's fun to watch the pastiche of political humor and celebrity mockery unfold.
