Cinematheque: Gentlemen Prefer Blondes at Vilas Hall

Jane Russell received top billing for Howard Hawks’ film adaptation of Anita Loos’ and Joseph Fields’ novel-turned-stage-play Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, but it was Marilyn Monroe’s breakout performance that made the film such a critical and commercial success. Monroe’s now-iconic performance of Jule Styne’s “Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend” is, arguably, the film’s most-remembered scene—and one that has been copied by other artists such as Madonna, Kylie Minogue, and Nicole Kidman (in the 2001 film Moulin Rouge!). Fate, however, didn’t seem to share the same preference as the rest of the boys: Monroe died of an apparent suicide less than 10 years after the film was released.
