With a résumé that includes Meet Me In St. Louis, An American In Paris, and Gigi, director Vincente Minnelli built his reputation on exuberant musicals, but his aptitude for melodrama was equally formidable. The follow-up to his superb Frank Sinatra-Dean Martin drama Some Came Running, 1960’s Home From The Hill stars Robert Mitchum as a wealthy, womanizing giant in a small Texas town. Mitchum and his embittered wife (Eleanor Parker) have long vied for the allegiance of their son George Hamilton, but as Hamilton grows older, his father makes aggressive moves to mold his heir in his image. His efforts backfire when Hamilton discovers he has an illegitimate half-brother (George Peppard), and Mitchum’s sins return to haunt him.
