City Center and Julian Lynch at Memorial Union Terrace
Fred Thomas is best known for Saturday Looks Good To Me, a project in which he and a sprawling cast of pals craft ramshackle but often excellent pop songs. Thomas has always aimed beyond the typical lo-fi indie-pop sound, though, drawing inspiration from Phil Spector and dub to make the most out of a stripped-down approach. Recently, he's been indulging his ear for spaciously reverbed layers of sound in the less pop-oriented project City Center. He hasn't simply gone electronic or ambient out of nowhere—acoustic guitars, tuneful vocals, and hooks still abound under the album's foggy surface. Rather, City Center's new self-titled album weaves sound-collage fragments, woozy instrumental loops, and traces of conventional songcraft coherently enough to surprise SLGTM fans without totally confusing them.
