Clutch, Danko Jones, and Caverns at Majestic Theatre
Clutch long ago dug into a groove that even those mesmerized by substances can lumber along to, and has since found little reason to stray from it. This is something that would start to weigh on most bands after a few years, but Clutch has stayed consistent—2009's Strange Cousins From The West stays the course and brushes aside lethargy like just another burnt-out roach. Chalk it up to a lean, rhythmically sharp sound that cuts down to the basics instead of drowning in grungy sludge. Sheer dogged focus has also done good things for Toronto band Danko Jones, which riffs with the menacing cheer of AC/DC and generally suggests what all these "post-grunge" or "modern rock" bands might sound like if they weren't all such self-defeating, humorless mopes.
