Cowboy Junkies at Majestic Theatre
Cowboy Junkies' music might strike some as a dispiriting crawl, but maybe their slow tempos and sparse, country-tinged songs have helped them conserve momentum. In 2007 the band returned to the Toronto church where 1988's The Trinity Sessions was recorded and played its songs (with new arrangements, and guests like Natalie Merchant and Vic Chesnutt) for the live album and DVD Trinity Revisited. The band still seems plenty invested in new material, though: 2007's studio album At the End Of Paths Taken found Margo Timmins' vocals aging well, and the forthcoming Renmin Park draws inspiration and a patchwork of environmental samples from guitarist-songwriter Michael Timmins' travels to China. Hope for a good balance of both old alt-country-slowcore and glimpses of the band's future at this show.
