Crocodiles and Netherfriends at Memorial Union Rathskeller
Crocodiles share a lot with Wavves, including a sound (washed-out fuzzy stoner pop) and a label (Fat Possum, which released Crocodiles’ Summer Of Hate). But Wavves tracks boast a trebly immediacy, while Crocodiles slather theirs with reverb, echo, and ceaseless repetition, creating an atmospheric brew that falls somewhere between Crystal Stilts and the garage-inflected sounds of Crocodiles’ own Los Angeles brethren. Chicago's Netherfriends are masterfully schooled in oddball, lurching loops, and they're only picking up steam with their debut six-song EP, Calling You Out. Chirping birds give way to oddly pleasing sing-along verses in “Really?” while warbling tapes layered under icy, grandiose bells and lyrics about getting drunk in “Friends With Lofts.”
