Cross Canadian Ragweed and Ha Ha Tonka at Majestic Theatre

Cross Canadian Ragweed’s initials conveniently serve as an homage to rootsy pioneers Creedence Clearwater Revival. Though the long-running band has been pegged as alt-country, this CCR actually sounds more like a solid, rockin’ pub band that owes at least as much to Skynyrd as it does to Buck Owens. Openers Ha Ha Tonka thrive on a tight binding of old-timey four-part harmonies, excitable piano and guitar grooves, and a heap of youthful indignation. The band slows down and builds some suspense on its second album, this year's Novel Sounds Of The Nouveau South. Not that Ha Ha Tonka stopped rocking, but songs like "The Outpouring" expand on the reflective side of its "foot-stompin' indie rock" songwriting.
