The Decemberists and Heartless Bastards at Overture Center for the Arts - Overture Hall

Decemberists leader Colin Meloy's songwriting gets more attention for its ornate wordplay and ambitious storytelling than for its gut-level melody and emotional weight. Then again, that's understandable: The Portland band branched out into multi-phase narrative prog-suites on 2006's The Crane Wife and this year's The Hazards Of Love. Here, The Decemberists will play Hazards in full (with help from guests like Becky Stark of Lavender Diamond and Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond), then come back for a second set of tunes from their previous albums. Openers Heartless Bastards started in a less fancy place—as a no-bullshit, earnest power trio driven by Erika Wennerstrom's unmistakable voice—but attempted some layered epics of their own on this year's The Mountain.
