Dick The Bruiser at Mickey's Tavern
The ill-defined "dance-punk" genre is one crowded little limo these days, from arty dissonance (Liars) to slicker treatments (Interpol), but local duo Dick The Bruiser would rather crowbar it down to an angrily grinding chassis. Drummer Tony Sellers and bassist Kevin Wade slammed raw, hard grooves into the 2008 EP Severe Songs, but even better, made it fun, funky, and loose at the same time. It helps that Sellers is just an entertaining drummer to watch, and that Wade shouts out lyrics that could only come from the world's most cracked magnetic-poetry kit ("I could be your Superman, I could wring your neck / I could sing 'The Star-Spangled Banner,' but the train's gonna wreck").
